New York, 09/20/2021

Business France and the prestigious Fondation Galien are pleased to announce the nine nominated companies for the 8th edition of the Galien Medstartup Awards, Galien USA innovation prize. This equivalent to the Nobel Prize in biopharmaceutical and medical technology research is a unique opportunity to highlight Franco-American cooperation in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical technologies, and digital health.

The winners will be announced on October 28, during the Galien Week of Innovation. The same day, they will also meet with major pharmaceutical, biotech and medtech companies, as well as insurance companies, patient associations and investors on the Galien Medstartup Partnering platform to discuss the development of new partnerships.

Despite the health crisis, the US market remains the largest in the world, far ahead of the main European markets (Germany, France, Italy, United Kingdom and Spain), and the undisputed leader in medical devices (it accounts for one-third of the global market). France remains the second largest European market after Germany. In a global industrial landscape worn down by the Covid-19 pandemic, pharmaceutical and healthtech businesses have shown great resilience. They keep advancing innovative solutions, boosted in part by the collaborations they developed.

According to Elsa Rive, Business France North America Healthcare & Life Sciences Director, “In this particular context, we are delighted to promote French startups to the global industry giants who are developing the innovations of tomorrow. Through the Galien Medstartup Awards, we are enabling them to develop partnerships and pursue their growth in collaboration with the United States, which accounts for almost one-quarter of foreign investment in France in the pharmaceutical sector and more than 40% in the medical sector. The Galien Medstartup Program is a great opportunity that we are proud to support, which allows us to strengthen the partnership between our two countries to improve global health.

During the 2021 Galien Week of Innovation, participants will be able to attend digital webinars hosted by an exceptional lineup of speakers. Discussion topics will cover return on experience and global data, post-pandemic strategies and benchmarks, as well as burning issues in global human health.

Since 2013, Business France and the Galien Foundation have partnered to support the international development of the most promising French startups, selected by a world-renowned panel, and connecting them with leading American businesses. For the past eight years, the Galien Medstartup Awards have been a real springboard for French businesses, with more than 125 collaborative projects and Franco-American partnerships signed. The Medstartup Days helped raise US$300 million to date and led to more than 400 B2B meetings organized between French firms and North American investors, industrial companies and opinion leaders.

“The partnership between the Galien Foundation and Business France is strategically aligned with the Foundation’s mission, which is to improve human health,” explains Bruno Cohen, President of the Galien Foundation. “Our two organizations both recognize the importance of innovation in life sciences in securing health as an essential resource. The Galien Medstartup Program generates significant global business opportunities by bringing together the best ideas from the two largest centers of excellence in biopharmaceutical research: the United States and Europe.”

“It is with great pleasure that we renew our partnership with the Galien Foundation every year and continue to work with this inspiring organization. We have witnessed the impact that the healthcare crisis has had on everyone and how important it is to advance further with biopharmaceutical research. Through return on experience and the sharing of knowledge, the Galien Week of Innovation is a vital opportunity to showcase the best of the French and American ecosystems, working together towards the same goal: namely improving human health worldwide,” commented Frederic Rossi, Director of Business France in North America.

A PRESTIGIOUS PANEL FOR INNOVATION

In 2021, the eighth edition of the Galien Medstartup Awards will be chaired by Bernard Poussot, Director of Roche Holding and former Chairman & CEO of Wyeth. This year again, the event will feature a remarkable world-renowned panel, rewarding the most innovative projects in the healthcare industry.
